  Ann's New Years Eve Star Used with permission from designer Ann M. Smith Copyright 2005 For a 12 1/2 inch unfinished Ann's Star you need: From your background cut sixteen 2 1/2 inch squares (blue stars) From color one cut eight 2 1/2 squares (light yellow) From color two cut four 2 1/2 by 4 1/2 inch rectangles and one 4 1/2 inch square (yellow print) From color three cut four 2 1/2 by 4 1/2 inch rectangles (darker yellow) |

Step one: make four four patch blocks using your background fabrics and color one 2 1/2 inch squares. Your four patch blocks should measure 4 1/2 inches. |

Step two: Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the remaining background squares. If you are using a dark fabric such as we are with these stars, you could fold the squares in half diagonally and finger press a line in. |

Next put a background square right sides together on the top of one of your color two rectangles so that the diagonal line goes from the top right corner towards the bottom left. Sew on that line, press to the background. You may trim back the extra fabrics to a 1/4 inch seam allowance if desired. |

Step three: Using the remaining background squares, put a background square right sides together on the top of one of your color three rectangles so that the diagonal line goes from the top left corner towards the bottom right. Sew on that line, press to the background. You may trim back the extra fabrics to a 1/4 inch seam allowance if desired. |
| Step four: Sew your rectangles together as shown. This unit should measure 4 1/2 inches. |

Step five: Sew four patches on either side of a star point unit. Repeat with a second star point unit.
Step six: Attach the remaining star points to each side of the 4 1/2 inch square.
| Sew together in rows, and then complete the block. Your completed Ann's Star should measure 12 1/2 inches. |  |
