Apple Tree

Not a hard block, it's all squares really. I chose to make my tree with lots of apples, you can do more leaves if you prefer. You need a total of twelve reds and greens combined for the leaves and apples. You can have half and half, or two apples and the rest leaves, or even just one apple and 11 leaves, it's up to you. However, I would use a variety of greens and reds to make the block interesting, how many of each you decide to make.

For the trunk of the tree, you need one 6 1/2 inch brown square and two 3 7/8 inch background color squares. OR you could use just one 4 inch square, your choice. Read next few paragraphs so you can see your options.

Option 1 - To make the trunk you need to mark the two squares diagonally through the middle, place that right sides together with the brown square and sew on that line, then trim off the excess.

Option 2 - However, if you use a 4 inch square, and draw a line diagonally down the middle, then mark two lines, 1/4 inch either side of that center line, and cut on the center line, and then sew those triangles carefully on the brown square on what was the center line.

And there is another option also… Option 3 - back to the 3 7/8 inch squares. When you are marking them, mark a second line 1/2 inch from the center line on one side only. After you sew on the center line, sew on the line you made 1/2 inch from that. And then cut 1/4 inch between those two lines. You will now have now only your tree trunk, but two 3 inch diagonal half squares you can add to your scrap basket.

Which ever option you decided to do, you can now put together your Apple Tree block. Since the trunk is finished, and all your square are cut, I suggest you lay them all out and move them around until you are pleased with the apple and leaves arrangement. However many of each you have, move them around until you are happy with the way they look.
The block on the left is from Civil War Quilts and the one on the right is my diagram of it.

One block shows more apples and the other more leaves.

Once you have decided on a layout, you can put them together. The best way to put them together is in halfs, bottom then top. Half of your bottom is done, with the trunk of the tree, so put together the four squares next to it, and add them to the trunk, and that half is finished.

Then put together all the leaves and apples from the top half, and attach that to the bottom half and your apple tree is finished. It should measure 12 1/2 inches.
            My block

Yes, this is a diagonal set block, but it isn't hard to make a diagonally set quilt. Check here for instructions.
