Aunt Eliza's Star
This looks like an Ohio Star, but that is made with three colors. This block is called Aunt Eliza's Star and is made with only two colors.
To make a 12 inch finished Aunt Eliza's Star you will need:
From a color cut two 5 3/8 inch squares and one 4 1/2 inch square.
And from your background cut two 5 3/8 inch squares and four 4 1/2 inch squares.
(more sizes below)
Place a background and a color right 5 3/8 inch square sides together. Carefully draw a line down the center, corner to corner, diagonally across the block. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.) Now if you have a true 1/4 inch foot on your machine, you can sew on either side of this drawn line. If not, you will have to draw a second line on either side, exactly 1/4 inch from the first line. This will be your sewing line.
After you have sewn on your sewing line, 1/4 inch on either side of your corner to corner to line, you will cut this square in half on your cutting line. Then you will cut it again on the opposite diagonal. You will now have four diagonal quarter-squares, which should measure exactly 4 1/2 inches.
| Please notice that this gives you two different kinds of sections, two with the light on the right, and two with the light on the left.
||It will take one of each of these to make one unit of your Aunt Eliza's Star. You need four units like this one.
When you have four made, follow this diagram to finish your Aunt Eliza's Star. It should measure 12 1/2 inches.
Here are other size squares needed to make different size Aunt Eliza's Star blocks.
For a 3 inch Ohio Star cut your squares 1 1/2 inches and 2 3/8 inches
For a 6 inch Ohio Star cut your squares 2 1/2 inches and 3 3/8 inches
For a 9 inch Ohio Star cut your squares 3 1/2 inches and 4 3/8 inches
For a 10 inch Ohio Star cut your squares 3 7/8 inches and 4 3/4 inch
