Put one of your background squares right side down on top of one of the brown rectangles, with the diagonal line as shown here. Sew on that diagonal line. Trim leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press the seam allowance towards the background fabric. Place another background square on the other end of that same brown rectangle. Make sure your diagonal line is going in the right direction. Sew on the diagonal line, trim leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance, and press toward the background fabric. Repeat with the remaining three brown rectangles. Now on to the gold rectangles. Put one of your background squares right side down on top of a gold rectangles, with the diagonal line as shown. Sew on that diagonal line. Trim leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press the seam allowance towards the background fabric. Place another background square on the other end of that same gold rectangle. Make sure your diagonal line is going in the right direction. Sew on the diagonal line, trim leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance, and press toward the background fabric. Repeat with the remaining three gold rectangles. Next put the brown units and gold units together as shown here. Press the seam allowances toward the gold blocks. Place two of the units you just made together. Be sure that you sew them as shown here. Repeat with the other two units. Now put those two together to finish your Balkan Puzzle. Your finished block should measure 12 1/2 inches.
