Big Dipper

This two color block has many names: Big Dipper, Bow Ties, Envelope Quilt, Hour Glass, Pork and Beans, The Whirling Blade and Yankee Puzzle. A three color version is called Electric Fan and that block can be found here.

To make this block you need two blue 7 3/16 inch squares, which you will cut into quarters diagonally and two white cut two 7 3/16 inch squares, which you will cut into quarters diagonally. Yes 3/16ths is an odd measurement, and some rulers don't even have 16ths on them. Cut what some people call a scant 1/4, or between 1/8 and 1/4 on your ruler.

When you cut these squares, you created bias edges. Be very careful when sewing and pressing not to stretch that bias.

Place a blue and white triangle right sides together and together sew on the short side. Repeat with the remaining blue and white triangles. Be sure to sew them all on the same side so they are all alike.

Then sew them together into 6 1/2 inch squares. Repeat with the remaining pieces.

Those four 6 1/2 inch squares when put together will make your 12 1/2 inch Big Dipper block.
