Buckeye Beauty

This is another block that has many names and most of those names apply to more than one block. In Barbara Brackman's "Encyclopedia Of Pieced Quilt Patterns" it is called Buckeye Beauty, Double Four Patch, Gay Scrap Quilt, Going to Chicago, Hour Glass, Jacob's Ladder, New Four Patch, Railroad, Railroad Crossing, and World's Fair.

Here are directions for making a 6 inch finished Buckeye Beauty. (More sizes below)

To make one Buckeye Beauty block you need:
Four 2 inch squares of pink and white (Or cut a 8 inch by 2 inch strip of each)
One 3 7/8 inch square each of purple and white.

If you cut an 8 inch strip, sew them together and then cut into four 2 inch segments, and then sew into a four patch. If you cut four 2 inch squares, you may sew them together into a four patch.

Next make two triangle squares. Draw a line corner to corner, (diagonally) through the white 3 7/8 inch squares. This will be a cutting line when you are finished. Place purple and white 3 7/8 inch squares right sides together. If you have a true 1/4 inch foot on your machine, you can sew on either side of the drawn line.

If not, you will have to draw a second line on either side, exactly 1/4 inch from the first line. They will be your sewing lines. After you have sewn on your sewing line, 1/4 inch on either side of your corner to corner to line, you will cut this square in half on the drawn cutting line. Clip off the corners as shown.

You will now have two triangle squares, which should measure exactly 3 1/2 inches.

Sew together a triangle square and four patch, and then sew them together to complete your Buckeye Beauty.

Here are the sizes you need to cut to make other sizes of the Buckeye Beauty block: (The 8ths are the cuts for triangle squares)
Cutting your squares 1 1/4 inches and 2 3/8 inches will give you a finished Buckeye Beauty block of 3 inches.
Cutting your squares 1 1/2 inches and 2 7/8 inches will give you a finished Buckeye Beauty block of 4 inches.
Cutting your squares 1 3/4 inches and 3 3/8 inches will give you a finished Buckeye Beauty block of 5 inches.
Cutting your squares 2 inches and 3 7/8 inches will give you a finished Buckeye Beauty block of 6 inches.
Cutting your squares 2 1/4 inches and 4 3/8 inches will give you a finished Buckeye Beauty block of 7 inches.
Cutting your squares 2 1/2 inches and 4 7/8 inches will give you a finished Buckeye Beauty block of 8 inches.
Cutting your squares 2 3/4 inches and 5 3/8 inches will give you a finished Buckeye Beauty block of 9 inches.
Cutting your squares 3 inches and 5 7/8 inches will give you a finished Buckeye Beauty block of 10 inches.
Cutting your squares 3 1/4 inches and 6 3/8 inches will give you a finished Buckeye Beauty block of 11 inches.
Cutting your squares 3 1/2 inches and 6 7/8 inches will give you a finished Buckeye Beauty block of 12 inches.
