Carrie Nation Quilt Block

For a 12 inch finished Carrie Nation block you will need:
From your bright gold cut one 3 1/2 inch by 14 inch strip
From your dark brown cut one 2 inch by 16 inch strip
From your background cut one 3 1/2 by 14 inch strip,
and four 3 1/2 inch squares
and one 2 inch by 16 inch strip.

Step one: Sew together your bright gold and background 3 1/2 by 14 inch strips. Cut into four 3 1/2 inch segments.

Sew back together into two four patch blocks, which should measure 6 1/2 inches. Trim if necessary.

Step two: Sew together your dark brown and background 2 by 16 inch strips. Cut into eight 2 inch segments.

Sew back together into four four patches, which should measure 3 1/2 inches. Again, trim if necessary.

Step three: With your dark brown and background four
patches, make another four patch using the 3 1/2 inch
background squares. You will need four of these units
and they should measure 6 1/2 inches.

Now assemble as shown. Your finished block should measure 12 1/2 inches.

This is my Carrie Nation sample. It does not have the bold contrast I would have preferred to show as a sample, but it was made as a baby quilt and I thought the softer colors worked better. This quilt was donated to the Sussex Pregnancy Care Center.

The quilt is only nine blocks because it was made from fabrics leftover from my stash. It was actually the perfect size for a new baby. The baby quilt was made using five yellow background Carrie Nation blocks and four green background blocks. Alternating them and turning them gives you the design.
Several years ago saw a quilt made with the Carrie Nation block,
and it was truly exquisite. The fabric was bright and flashing
batiks and the setting was a barn raising setting, with alternate
blocks colored differently. I was unable to get permission to
photograph it, I could not find the shop manager, but I did put
a good photo of it in my head's memory. Here is my version of
it done on EQ.
