Chunky Shoofly

Here's another block with more than one name. I'm calling mine the Chunky Shoofly but in Barbara Brackman's "Encyclopedia Of Pieced Quilt Patterns" it is called Grandmother's Choice and Shoofly Variation. A traditional Shoo Fly block has nine equal size parts and this Shoofly does not.

For a six inch finished (in the quilt) Chunky Shoofly block you will need:
From your dark, cut two 3 3/8 inch squares and one 1 1/2 inch square.
From your background, cut two 3 3/8 inch squares and four 3 by 1 1/2 inch rectangles.
(Other sizes are listed below)

Place a dark 3 3/8 inch square and a background 3 3/8 inch square right sides together. Carefully draw a line down the center, corner to corner, diagonally across the block. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.) Now if you have a true 1/4 inch foot on your machine, you can sew on either side of this drawn line. If not, you will have to draw a second line on either side, exactly 1/4 inch from the first line. This will be your sewing line.

After you have sewn on your sewing line, 1/4 inch on either side of your corner to corner to line, you will cut this square in half on your cutting line. You will now have two diagonal half-squares, which should measure exactly 3 1/4 inches.

Make two sets like this.

Make one set like this.

Now you can assemble and finish your block which will measure 6 1/2 inches exactly!

Want to make a different size Chunky Shoofly?
Cutting your squares 2 1/8 inches for the triangle squares, 1 inch for the center square and 1 by 1 3/4 inches for the four rectangles will give you a finished block of 3 inches.
Cutting your squares 3 3/8 inches for the triangle squares, 1 1/2 inches for the center square and 3 by 1 1/2 inches for the four rectangles will give you a finished block of 6 inches.
Cutting your squares 4 5/8 inches for the triangle squares, 2 inches for the center square and 4 1/4 by 2 inches for the four rectangles will give you a finished block of 9 inches.
Cutting your squares 5 inches for the triangle squares, 2 1/8 inches for the center square and 4 5/8 12/ by 2 1/8 inches for the four rectangles will give you a finished block of 10 inches.
Cutting your squares 5 7/8 inches for the triangle squares, 2 1/2 inches for the center square and 5 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches for the four rectangles will give you a finished block of 12 inches.
