Darting Birds

To make a 12 inch finished (in the quilt) Darting Birds block you will need:
From your background cut two 4 7/8 inch squares and one 4 1/2 inch square
From a dark (purple) cut two 4 7/8 inch squares
From a medium (hot pink) cut two 4 7/8 inch squares and two 4 1/2 inch squares

You will be making several diagonal squares for this block. First, mark your background squares diagonally through the center. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.) Place your medium square, right sides together, with the background. Sew on either side of the drawn line, exactly 1/4 inch from the first line. Cut this square in half on the cutting line. (Don't forget to trim off the corners or dog ears) You will now have two diagonal half-squares, which should measure exactly 4 1/2 inches.

Repeat with the remaining 4 7/8 inch squares. You need:
Two pink and purple
diagonal half squares
                Two pink and background
diagonal half squares
                Two purple and background
diagonal half squares

When you have finished making your diagonal half squares, follow the diagrams below to put your Darting Birds rows together.
Then put the three rows together into your finished block, which should measure 12 1/2 inches.
