Game Cocks

For a 12 1/2 inch Game Cocks block you need:
Four 3 3/8 inch squares and a strip at least 24 inches by 1 3/4 inches of a white-on-white. You will cut that strip into four 2 1/2 inch units and eight 1 3/4 inch squares. Note: You could use the strip method of putting together your four patches if you want, rather than cutting them into squares and then sewing them back together.
Four 3 3/8 inch squares and four 2 1/2 by 3 inch rectangles of red
Two strips at least 14 inches by 1 3/4 inches of your print. You may cut the strips into sixteen 1 3/4 inch squares or make your four patches from the strips. You also need four 2 1/2 inch by 1 3/4 inch rectangles.
A 14 by 1 3/4 inch strip which you will cut into eight 1 3/4 inch squares (or not) and one 2 1/2 inch square of the black

Have I confused you with the strip or not talk? Sorry about that, let me make it a bit clearer, I hope. You could cut all those pieces into 1 3/4 inch squares and then sew them back together into four patches. Or you could do it the easy way, that is by sewing together a strip then cutting that into 1 3/4 inch segments. Put the two strips, in this case the print and the white-on-white, right sides together and sew a 1/4 inch seam. Then press that stip open and cut your 1 3/4 inch squares. Finally, sew your four patches together.

Repeat with the black and print strips.

Next we will make the diagonal half squares (DHS) or half square triangles, which ever you prefer calling them. You can use which ever technique you want to make them, but this is my favorite.
Mark your white-on-white squares diagonally through the center. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.) Place a red 3 3/8 inch square, right sides together with one of the 3 3/8 inch marked white-on-white square. Sew on either side of the drawn line, exactly 1/4 inch from the first line. Cut this square in half on the cutting line. Press them all to the red. You will now have two diagonal half-squares, which should measure exactly 3 inches. Repeat with the remaining 3 3/8 inch squares.

Sew the four patches together with the diagonal half squares. Pay close attention to the direction your print goes and the direction of the diagonal half square too. Make four of each. Press to the four patch units.

Sew those together into four units

Make four units like this

Put those units together like this. Watch the direction they go carefully.

Sew together the middle row by putting a 2 1/2 inch square between two units you just made.

Assemble following the diagram below. Your Game Cocks block should measure 12 1/2 inches.
