Ohio Star

For a 12 inch finished Ohio Star block you need -
From dark blue cut two 5 3/8 inch squares and five 4 1/2 inch square
From yellow cut two 5 3/8 inch squares Other sizes are listed below

Start by marking on the wrong side a diagonal line through all of the yellow 5 3/8 inch squares in both directions. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.)
If you have a true 1/4 inch foot on your machine, you can sew on either side of just one of those drawn lines. If not, you will have to draw a second line on either side of just one of the lines, exactly 1/4 inch from the first line. These will be your sewing lines. After you have sewn on your sewing lines, you will cut this square in half on both of the cutting lines.

You should now have four diagonal quarter-squares, which when sewn into a square should measure exactly 4 1/2 inches.
You need eight diagonal quarter-squares, so repeat this step.

Now you can put your block together as shown here.

Here are other size squares needed to make different size Ohio Star blocks.
For a 3 inch Ohio Star cut your squares 1 1/2 inches and 2 3/8 inches
For a 6 inch Ohio Star cut your squares 2 1/2 inches and 3 3/8 inches
For a 9 inch Ohio Star cut your squares 3 1/2 inches and 4 3/8 inches
