Ohio Star

For the Ohio Star block you will need:
From a medium cut two 5 1/4 inch squares and one 4 1/2 inch square.
From a light cut one 5 1/4 inch square
From the background cut one 5 1/4 inch square and four 4 1/2 inch squares.

Start by cutting all of the 5 1/4 inch squares in quarters diagonally.

Sew these together in units as diagramed here. Be very careful when handling these pieces, as you are dealing with bias edges. Bias will stretch if handled roughly. I suggest that you pin carefully to avoid stretching.

Make four sets of each.

Sew one of each set together into a unit as shown,
which should measure 4 1/2 inches.
You need four of these units.
Sew the rows together as shown.

Your finished block should measure 12 1/2 inches exactly.

Ohio Star
For a six inch finished (6 1/2 unfinished) Ohio Star block you will need:
From a medium cut two 3 1/4 inch squares and one 2 1/2 inch square.
From a light cut one 3 1/4 inch square
From a background cut one 3 1/4 inch square and four 2 1/2 inch squares.
