Delaware Quilts
Block of the Month
Sailing Ships

I first published this block in May of 2002, and I thought it was time for an update. But I still like the colorful block it is, so I'll just add to it. Below is a quilt lay out for the 2012 version of the Sailing Ships. I hope you enjoy it.
Sailing ships is a very easy block to make. For this sailing ships block you will need two different blues, a sky and a water, something colorful for the sails and another bright color for the boat.

You need to make the following cuts
from the sky blue, cut two 3 7/8 inch squares, two 6 1/2 by 3 1/2 inch rectangles and two 3 1/2 inch squares,
from your water cut one 12 1/2 by 3 1/2 inch rectangle
from the boat color cut one 12 1/2 by 3 1/2 inch rectangle and
from your sails cut two 3 7/8 inch squares.

You now want to make diagonal half squares with your 3 7/8 inch squares of sail fabric and sky blue. (You can find directions for diagonal half squares are here) When finished you will have two diagonal half-squares, which should measure exactly 3 1/2 inches. You need to repeat this step with the second sky blue and sail 3 7/8 inch squares.

Sew all four squares together following the diagram at the right.
Add the sky blue rectangles to either side.
Take the 3 1/2 inch squares of your sky blue, and draw a line diagonally from corner to corner.
Place these squares on your boat rectangle, and sew on that drawn line.

Cut off the extra fabrics, leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance of course.

Now assemble your sailing ship following the diagram at the top of the page.

For the 2012 version of Sailing Ships I'm going to use all the same background, something colorful for the sails and another bright color for the boat. You could make your ships all the same, or use up some scraps and make them a colorful flotilla.

The sashing is cut 2 1/2 inches and the setting squares are 2 1/2 inches. You may use a different fabric for water or not, which ever you like.

Here is one of my sailing ships quilts, waiting to be quilted.
