Sawtooth Star

Here is a new version of one of my older BOMs, the Sawtooth Star. This time I am giving you two ways to make the same star.

Check your measurements very carefully. Each block should measure 12 1/2 inches when it is finished. Accuracy from beginning to end will assure that your blocks come out perfectly. Measure carefully, sew carefully, and you will have a perfect block.

For the four color Sawtooth Star you will need four different star colors, and your background-
From each star color, cut one 3 7/8 inch squares and one 3 1/2 inch square.
From your background, cut four 3 7/8 inch squares and four 3 1/2 inch squares
Or you may choose to use just two star colors.
From each star color, cut two 3 7/8 inch squares and two 3 1/2 inch square.
From your background, cut four 3 7/8 inch squares and four 3 1/2 inch squares

Once again we are working with diagonal half squares. (You can find directions with diagrams for making diagonal half squares by following this link. .) Place 3 7/8 inch square of background and a star color right sides together. Carefully draw a line down the center, corner to corner, diagonally across the block. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.)

Now if you have a true 1/4 inch foot on your machine, you can sew on either side of this drawn line. If not, you will have to draw a second line on either side, exactly 1/4 inch from the first line. This will be your sewing line.

After you have sewn on your sewing line, 1/4 inch on either side of your corner to corner to line, you will cut this square in half on your cutting line. You will now have two diagonal half-squares, which should measure exactly 3 1/2 inches. Repeat with the remaining 3 7/8 inch squares of background and star colors.

You may now assemble your block in rows. It is important that you follow the pattern for placing the star colors. Each number, 1 2 3 4, is a different star color.

Complete your block by sewing the rows together in order. The finished block should measure 12 1/2 inches.

Here is my Row by Row 12 1/2 inch sawtooth star

I used four 3 7/8 inch squares from my background and color two, four 3 1/2 inch squares of my background, and two 3 1/2 inch squares each of colors three and five
