6 inch Sawtooth Star
These directions are for a 6 inch Sawtooth Star. (Six inch when finshed in the quilt, 6 1/2 inches when you are finished making it.) What’s the difference between this Sawtooth Star and the 12 inch Sawtooth Star? The 12 inch Sawtooth Star is made using diagonal half squares and this on is made using flying geese units. The biggest difference is fewer seams. You can decide for yourself which method you like best to make the Sawtooth Star.

To make a 6 inch Sawtooth Star you need:
From your background fabric, four 2 inch squares and four 2 by 3 1/2 inch rectangles
For your star points (I choose light purple) you need eight 2 inch squares. Lightly mark a diagonal line on the reverse side of these two inch squares.
For the center four patch you need four 2 inch squares. You may mix and match these as you want to add variety to your star. I choose two contrasting darker colors.

Place a background square right side down on top of a rectangle, with the diagonal line as shown. Sew on that diagonal line. Press, and then trim leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Now sew another background square on the other end of that same rectangle. Make sure your diagonal line is going in the right direction. Sew on the diagonal line, press and trim leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Make a four patch unit for the center of the block.
This should measure 3 1/2 inches when finished.

Add a background square to both sides of two of the star point units

Add star point units to two sides of the four patch unit.

Put your block together as shown. Press the seams towards
the center of the block. It should measure exactly 6 1/2 inches.
