School Girl's Puzzle

For the School Girl's Puzzle you will need:
From your tan and red background cut two 3 7/8 inch squares and four 3 1/2 inch squares
From your red cut two 3 7/8 inch squares
From a medium cut one 3 7/8 inch squares
From a black cut two 3 7/8 inch squares and two 3 1/2 inch squares
From your second background cut three 3 7/8 inch squares

You will be making mostly diagonal squares for this block. First, mark your background squares diagonally through the center. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.) Place your medium square, right sides together, with the background. Sew on either side of the drawn line, exactly 1/4 inch from the first line. Cut this square in half on the cutting line. You will now have two diagonal half-squares, which should measure exactly 3 1/2 inches.

Repeat with the remaining 3 7/8 inch squares. You will need:

Four tan and red background
and red diagonal half squares

Two second background and
medium diagonal half squares

Four black and second
background diagonal half squares
Make two sets like this.         And two sets like this.

Assemble following the diagram.

Your School Girl's Puzzle should measure 12 1/2 inches when finished.
