Shoo Fly Too

This is another variation of the Shoo Fly block. In Barbara Brackman's "Encyclopedia Of Pieced Quilt Patterns" it is also called Far West, Paths and Stiles, and Stiles and Paths.

To make a six inch finished (in a quilt) Shoo Fly block like this you will need
From the background (white) you need two 2 7/8 inch squares
From the dark blue you need eight 2 1/2 by 1 1/8 inch rectangles and four 1 1/8 inch squares
From the yellow you need two 2 7/8 inch squares and four 1 1/8 inch squares
From the light blue you need four 2 1/2 by 1 1/8 inch rectangles and one 1 1/8 inch square
(Other sizes are listed below)

Place a background and yellow 2 7/8 inch square right sides together. Carefully draw a line down the center, corner to corner, diagonally across the block. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.) Now if you have a true 1/4 inch foot on your machine, you can sew on either side of this drawn line. If not, you will have to draw a second line on either side, exactly 1/4 inch from the first line. This will be your sewing line.

After you have sewn on your sewing line, 1/4 inch on either side of your corner to corner to line, you will cut this square in half on your cutting line. You will now have two diagonal half-squares, which should measure exactly 2 1/2 inches. Repeat with remaining 2 7/8 inch squares.

Next make four units like this.

And finally make a little nine patch block like this.

Now that you have all the parts you can put your block together.

Want to make a different size Shoo Fly Too?
Cutting your squares 1 7/8 inches for the triangle squares, 7/8 by 1 1/2 inches for the rectangles and 7/8 for the nine patch will give you a finished block of 3 inches.
Cutting your squares 2 7/8 inches for the triangle squares, 1 1/8 by 2 1/2 inches for the rectangles and 1 1/8 for the nine patch will give you a finished block of 6 inches.
Cutting your squares 3 7/8 inches for the triangle squares, 3 1/2 by 1 1/2 inches for the rectangles and 1 1/2 for the nine patch will give you a finished block of 9 inches.
Cutting your squares 4 1/8 inches for the triangle squares, 3 7/8 by 1 5/8 inches for the rectangles and 1 5/8 for the nine patch will give you a finished block of 10 inches.
Cutting your squares 4 7/8 inches for the triangle squares, 4 1/2 by 1 7/8 inches for the rectangles and 1 7/8 for the nine patch will give you a finished block of 12 inches.
