Square in a Square in a Square

To make a six inch finished (6 1/2 unfinished) Square in a Square in a Square block you will need:
For the center square you will need a 3 1/2 inch square
For the second square you will need a 4 1/4 inch square cut in quarters diagonally
For the outside square you will need two 3 7/8 inch squares cut in half diagonally

Sew two pieces of the second square on opposite sides of the center square. Handle your pieces carefully, as some of the edges are bias, and are stretchy. When you press, press gently so you don't distort any edges.
Sew the remaining two pieces on, and press carefully.

Don't forget to trim those dog ear off.

To finish your square, sew the remaining pieces on just as you did the last round. Remember to press carefully, and to trim your dog ears when finished.

Your finished Square X 3 block should measure 6 1/2 inches.

Alternate method for making a Square in a Square in a Square...
For the center square you will need a 3 1/2 inch square
For the second square you will need a 4 1/2 inch square cut in quarters diagonally, just a tad bigger than above.
For the outside square you will need two 4 inch squares cut in half diagonally, again, just a little bit bigger than above.

Using the same directions as above, attach the second square to the center square. Press carefully, and carefully trim back evenly to 4 3/4 inches. I suggest you trim all four sides just a sliver, keeping the center square in the center. The diagram shows only the first and second square, you would trim the sides from the outer square the same way. Add the outer square and trim back evenly to your unfinished square of 6 1/2 inches.

If you sew four squares together, you will have a 12 1/2 inch unfinished block.

Here are two diagrams of quilts that I've never made. The one on the right was for a Square in a Square in a Square swap that was done many years ago. A friend used this pattern to make some I Spy Blocks for her granddaughter, using the center squares for the eye spy blocks. It was a colorful quilt and was quite loved by both baby and parents. That baby is now expecting her own baby in July 2020, and I wonder if that quilt is still around.
