Star X or The Silent Star

Like so many blocks, this one has two names, you may decide what to call your block.

I'm calling this one Star X.

For a 12 inch Star X block you need -
From floral green cut one 5 3/8 inch square and two 4 7/8 inch squares
From the light green cut two 4 7/8 inch squares and two 5 3/8 inch squares
From the purple cut three 5 3/8 inch squares

First let's make the corner blocks. You need to use the floral green and light green 4 7/8 inch squares to make diagonal half squares, place them right sides together. Draw a line corner to corner, (diagonally) through the wrong side of the lightest color, this is the cutting line. If you have a quarter-inch foot, sew on either side of that line, then cut on that line. (If you do not have a quarter-inch foot, just add two more lines, 1/4 inch on either side of the first line.) Press to the darker fabric. Your diagonal half squares should be 4 1/2 inches. Repeat with the remaining 4 7/8 inch squares, and the four corner blocks are complete.
To make the quarter square units, place a purple and light green 5 3/8 inch squares right sides together. Follow the same directions above for making the diagonal half squares. After you sew on your sewing line, 1/4 inch on either side of your diagonal line going corner to corner to line, you cut this square in half on your cutting line. You then cut it a second time on the opposite diagonal.

You now have four diagonal quarter-squares, which when sewn into a square should measure exactly 4 1/2 inches, and you will have two of them. Press to the darker fabric. Do the same with another purple and light green square to make another pair.

Repeat these same steps with a purple and green floral square for the center square. Yes, you will have an extra center square or pieces for one at least.

Now put your blocks together as shown. Your completed Star X should measure 12 1/2 inches.

Here's one Pam made.
