  Weathervane For the Weathervane block you will need: From your blue cut four 2 1/2 by 4 1/2 inch rectangles and four 2 7/8 inch squares From your green cut four 2 1/2" squares, four 2 7/8 inch squares and one 4 1/2 inch square From your background (floral) cut four 2 1/2 inch squares and eight 2 7/8 inch squares The weathervane block should finish 12 1/2 inches, but it has a lot of seams. Cut carefully, sew carefully and you will have no problems. |
Place a 2 7/8 green block and a 2 7/8 background block right sides together. Carefully draw a line down the center, corner to corner, diagonally across the block. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.) If you have a true 1/4 inch foot on your machine, you can sew on either side of this drawn line. If not, you will have to draw a second line on either side, exactly 1/4 inch from the first line. This will be your sewing line. After you have sewn on your sewing line, 1/4 inch on either side of your corner to corner to line, you will cut this square in half on your cutting line. You will now have two diagonal half-squares, which should measure exactly 2 1/2 inches. Repeat with the remaining 2 7/8 inch squares.
Repeat this with all of your 2 7/8 inch squares. You will need a total of eight green and background and eight blue and background diagonal half squares.
Now make four units like this  |

All of those units should finish at 4 1/2 inches. If they are not 4 1/2 inches, check your seam allowances, make sure your diagonal half-squares are 2 1/2 inches, and your squares are 2 1/2 inches, and that your rectangles are 2 1/2 by 4 1/2. If these units don't measure 4 1/2 inches, then your block won't measure 12 1/2 when you put it together, so you need to fix them before you go any further. |
