Weathervane

For the Weathervane block you will need:
From your blue cut four 2 1/2 by 4 1/2 inch rectangles and four 2 7/8 inch squares
From your green cut four 2 1/2" squares, four 2 7/8 inch squares and one 4 1/2 inch square
From your background (floral) cut four 2 1/2 inch squares and eight 2 7/8 inch squares

The weathervane block should finish 12 1/2 inches, but it has a lot of seams. Cut carefully, sew carefully and you will have no problems.

Place a 2 7/8 green block and a 2 7/8 background block right sides together. Carefully draw a line down the center, corner to corner, diagonally across the block. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.) If you have a true 1/4 inch foot on your machine, you can sew on either side of this drawn line. If not, you will have to draw a second line on either side, exactly 1/4 inch from the first line. This will be your sewing line. After you have sewn on your sewing line, 1/4 inch on either side of your corner to corner to line, you will cut this square in half on your cutting line. You will now have two diagonal half-squares, which should measure exactly 2 1/2 inches. Repeat with the remaining 2 7/8 inch squares.

Repeat this with all of your 2 7/8 inch squares. You will need a total of eight green and background and eight blue and background diagonal half squares.

Now make four units like this
            and four units like this.
All of those units should finish at 4 1/2 inches. If they are not 4 1/2 inches, check your seam allowances, make sure your diagonal half-squares are 2 1/2 inches, and your squares are 2 1/2 inches, and that your rectangles are 2 1/2 by 4 1/2. If these units don't measure 4 1/2 inches, then your block won't measure 12 1/2 when you put it together, so you need to fix them before you go any further.

Assemble your block as shown.

You completed block should measure 12 1/2 inches.
