Yankee Puzzle

For a 12 inch finished Yankee Puzzle you will need:
From your background cut eight 3 7/8 inch squares
From a dark (purple) cut two 3 7/8 inch squares
From a medium (hot pink) cut six 3 7/8 inch squares

To make your job a little easier, draw a diagonal line through all of your background squares on the wrong side. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.)

First we'll make all our diagonal half squares. Place a background and medium 3 7/8 inch square right sides together. If you have a true 1/4 inch foot on your machine, you can sew on either side of this drawn line. If not, you will have to draw a second line on either side, exactly 1/4 inch from the first line. They will be your sewing lines. After you have sewn on your sewing line, 1/4 inch on either side of your corner to corner to line, you will cut this square in half on your cutting line. Trim off the corners (or dog ears) You will now have two diagonal half-squares, which should measure exactly 3 1/2 inches.

You need to repeat this step with all 3 7/8 inch squares.
You will need four dark diagonal half squares and twelve medium diagonal half squares.

Make two rows like this

and two like this.

And then assemble in to your Yankee Puzzle block.
Your finished block should measure 12 1/2 inches.
