  Attic Window These directions are to make just one 12 inch finished Attic Window block. Because you only need one of each triangle square you have to cut the pieces in half diagonally and then sew them together. To make more than one, see directions below. For one 12 inch finished Attic Window block you need: From your red two 4 1/2 inch squares and one 4 7/8 inch square From your blue cut two 4 1/2 inch squares and one 4 7/8 inch square From your background (white) cut three 4 1/2 inch squares and one 4 7/8 inch square |
Carefully cut in half diagonally each of your 4 7/8 inch squares. Cutting them this way creates bias so handle them carefully. You don't want to stretch them out of shape. (You will have a half of both the red and blue squares left over if you are making just one block.)
Pair red and white and blue and white triangles, and sew them together carefully. Try not to stretch them. Your triangle squares should measure 4 1/2 inches.
Place those two triangle squares on either side of a background 4 1/2 inch square for your center row.
Assemble your block following the diagram. Your completed Attic Window block should measure 12 1/2 inches.
Of course if you are making more than one Attic Window block, you could use your favorite technique for making triangle squares. My favorite way to make triangle squares (a.k.a. diagonal half squares) is shown here. This would give you two blue and white triangle squares, enough for two Attic Windows blocks.

Here are the cuts needed to make Attic Window blocks in many different sizes: Cutting your squares 1 1/2 inches (1 7/8 for triangles) will give you a finished block of 3 inches. Cutting your squares 2 inches (2 3/8 for triangles) will give you a finished block of 4 1/2 inches. Cutting your squares 2 1/2 inches (2 7/8 for triangles) will give you a finished block of 6 inches. Cutting your squares 3 inches (3 3/8 for triangles) will give you a finished block of 7 1/2 inches. Cutting your squares 3 1/2 inches (3 7/8 for triangles) will give you a finished block of 9 inches. Cutting your squares 4 inches (4 3/8 for triangles) will give you a finished block of 10 1/2 inches. Cutting your squares 4 1/2 inches (4 7/8 for triangles) will give you a finished block of 12 inches. Cutting your squares 5 1/2 inches (5 7/8 for triangles) will give you a finished block of 15 inches. Cutting your squares 6 1/2 inches (6 7/8 for triangles) will give you a finished block of 18 inches. These are finished sizes, after the block is sewn into a quilt. |
