Friendship Flag

The Friendship Flag block is a 12 inch block and is made is units. This is a very easy block, and below are a few star options if you'd like to use a different star.

For the Friendship Star unit you need:
from your star color cut two 2 7/8 inch squares and one 2 1/2 inch square.
from your blue cut two 2 7/8 inch squares and four 2 1/2 inch squares.

You need four diagonal half squares for this block. First, mark two 2 7/8 inch star color squares diagonally through the center. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.) Place right sides together with a blue square. Sew on either side of the drawn line, exactly 1/4 inch from the line. Cut this square in half on the cutting line. Trim off the corners or dog ears as some people like to call them. You will now have two diagonal half-squares, which should measure exactly 2 1/2 inches.

Now to put together the little Friendship Star Block.
Make two rows like this and
            one row like this.
Assemble as shown in the diagram.

Next you need to cut from white two 2 1/2 by 6 1/2 inch stripes and from red one 2 1/2 by 6 1/2 inch stripe.
Sandwich the 2 1/2 by 6 1/2 red inch stripe with the two 2 1/2 by 6 1/2 white inch stripes. Sew the 6 1/2 inch stripe unit to the star unit.

The final unit is easy, you need one 2 1/2 by 12 1/2 inch white stripe and two 2 1/2 by 12 1/2 inch red stripes.

Sew the two units together and your Friendship Flag is finished. It should measure 12 1/2 inches.

Here are a few other stars you could use in your Flag if you wanted, and links to the patterns for each one by clicking on them. Be sure to use the 6 1/2 inch pattern!
