Block of the Month

Friendship Flag

What better block for July than this one.
For the Friendship Star block you will need:
from your star color cut two 2 7/8 inch squares and one 2 1/2 inch square.
from your blue cut two 2 7/8 inch squares and four 2 1/2 inch squares.

You can see step by step directions for diagonal half squares here.
You will need four diagonal half squares for this block. First, mark two 2 7/8 inch star color squares diagonally through the center. (This will be a cutting line when you are finished.) Place right sides together with a blue square. Sew on either side of the drawn line, exactly 1/4 inch from the line. Cut this square in half on the cutting line. Trim off the corners, or dog ears as some people like to call them. You will now have two diagonal half-squares, which should measure exactly 2 1/2 inches.

Make two rows like this     and one like this
and then assemble the star block

For the stripes you will need:
from white cut two 2 1/2 by 6 1/2 inch stripes and one 2 1/2 by 12 1/2 inch stripes
from red cut two one 2 1/2 by 6 1/2 inch stripes and two 2 1/2 by 12 1/2 inch stripes

Sandwich the 2 1/2 by 6 1/2 red inch stripe with the two 2 1/2 by 6 1/2 white inch stripes.
Do the same for the two 2 1/2 by 12 1/2 red stripes and 2 1/2 by 12 1/2 white stripe.

Sew the 6 1/2 inch stripe unit to the star unit, then sew the 12 1/2 inch stripe unit to that.

This would make a festive table topper for July.

And you could change the stars around, using any 6 1/2 inch star, for a variety.

Check the BOMs for a variety of 6 inch stars.
