October 2006 Retreat, Thursday October 19 through check out Sunday October 22
The retreat officially begins at check in on Thursday October 19 any time after 2:30. After you've checked in at the front office and unloaded your car, bring your sewing supplies to the conference room. (If you have not experienced the guided tour provided by the hotel before, be sure to sign up at the front desk to reserve your time.)
Unlike retreats of the past, we will not start our project on Thursday afternoon this year. So if you wish to do a little shopping before you check in, go right ahead. Your room is guaranteed, so you do not need to check in right away. Go shopping, have some dinner, and then come in to get started.
We will start working on our mystery project at 7:00. I will pass out step one of the mystery project at 7:00. We will all make the first block together, and then you will have as long as you want to make additional blocks. However... I will not give the complete pattern with the mystery solution until I feel everyone is ready for it And that might not be until Saturday morning!
Mystery Requirements:
Our mystery quilt can be done totally scrappy, or with planned colors. You can use from your stash, or go out and buy all new. You need lights and darks. You need high contrast. You may use either two colors, or a hundred different colors. (I personally prefer using a lot of different colors, but I happen to love scrappy quilts.)
Color suggestions
Totally scrappy - all whites, white on whites, light tones on tones and very pale colors contrasting with all darks of lots of different colors.
All one color - A very very pale and very very dark shade of the same color, pale blue contrasting with dark navy
High contrast - Black and white
Planned scrappy - how about lots of different pinks (light) and lots of different purples (dark)
Christmas - all reds and all greens or all Christmas prints and white on whites.
You can make this quilt as big or as small as you prefer. From a lap quilt to a king size, this pattern will do well.
Below are the requirements for different size quilts.
Lap quilt - 6 squares by 5 squares - 15 light and 15 dark squares
Finishes approximately 36 by 37 before borders
Twin quilt - 7 squares by 10 squares - 35 light and 35 dark squares
Finishes approximately 42 by 75 before borders
Queen quilt - 10 squares by 11 squares - 55 light and 55 dark squares
Finishes approximately 60 by 82 before borders
King quilt - 13 squares by 11 squares - 72 light and 72 dark squares
Finishes approximately 78 by 82 before borders
Borders may be added as desired to enlarge these quilts, or you can add more rows.
Before the retreat you need to cut some squares. They are to be cut 8 1/2 inches square. Please cut at least enough for the lap quilt.
For the retreat you will need the usual sewing supplies: your sewing machine in good working order with several extra wound bobbins, rotary cutter, mat, transparent quilting ruler, needle and thread, straight pins, seam ripper, scissors, and a marking pencil. (A square ruler will be helpful for this class if you have one, at least 8 inches square.) We will supply the irons and ironing surface.
We would like everyone to make a nametag please. We need to know who you are. Rules are simple; you make your own quilted name tag in any way your wish. It must be quilted, and no larger than six inches. It must have your name on it somewhere. You may not use a name tag you used before! Retreaters will judge nametags and "Best of Show" will win $20 for shopping the next day.
Don't forget that hot tub, bring your bathing suit and relax the shopping aches away before you head to bed.
Friday is a busy day and you may want a good breakfast to start your day. I suggest the Bird-in-Hand Family Inn Restaurant. (Call ahead for seating, extension 1550.) We will resume our shopping for those who want to get out again. We will hand out shopping directions and any coupons we have to aid you in your adventure. (If you'd prefer staying in, the conference room will be open.)
Dinner time will be announced later. We will be dining at the Bird-in-Hand Family Inn Restaurant. We will be seated as a group, so it is important that everyone be on time. After dinner head back to the conference room. We will continue working on our project and have some retreat fun while working.
Saturday morning we will finish up our mystery project, giving you the afternoon free. If you would like to stay and sew, you are welcome to. Remember that most stores are closed on Sunday so be sure to visit all the wonderful quilt and fabric shops Saturday. Don't miss the Farmer's Market next door. Take advantage of all there is around here, go out and explore.
We'll have our retreat guild meeting Saturday evening, with show and tell, retreat reports, and of course more fun. We will enjoy a Retreat Pollyanna. Everyone who would like to participate is asked to bring a nicely wrapped quilt related gift to be put in the exchange. Gifts should be worth between $5 and $10 and must be quilt related.
Sunday AM get up bright and early for a delicious breakfast buffet at the Bird-in-Hand Family Inn Restaurant. Your breakfast ticket will be in your key envelope which you receive at check in. DO NOT lose it. Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 10:00. The conference room will open at 9:00 for you to collect your belongings, and will close at 10:30 for checkout. Check out is before 11, and you must check out at the front office.
