Star Sampler

Here is a diagram of the blocks in my quilt, by columns from left to right, top to bottom.
Column one:
    Friendship with a 4 1/2 inch Hunter Star corner, Ohio Star, Nancy's Star, six inch Ohio Star, six inch Floating 8 Point Star, Ann's Star
Column two:
    Comet Star, six inch Spinning Star, six inch April Star, Sawtooth Star, Comet Star, Hunter Star
Column three:
    Spinning Star, Clays Choice, six inch Eccentric Star , six inch Ann's Star, April Star, No-Name Star
Column four:
    Ann's Star, Floating Eight Pointed Star, April Star , six inch Comet Star, six inch Friendship Star, Friendship star with Sawtooth Star in the corner

You may have noticed that my star sampler includes several smaller stars along with the 12 1/2 inch stars. When I started my project I knew I wanted to use several size stars, but had no idea how I would incorporate them in the quilt. When I pretty much ran out of background fabric I decided it was time to make that decision. I'd made a few 6 1/2 inch blocks as I went along, now I needed to decide how to use them, and how to set the quilt.
I laid all my blocks down on two large tables, and started moving them around until I was happy with their arrangement. The photo at the right shows progress, but not the final setting. When I found a setting that I liked, I made stars I was missing. Thank goodness there were just enough scraps to finish exactly what I needed. Since someone asked, yes, the background and sashing are slightly different. The star background has gold stars on it, and the sashing has silver. They are a Hoffman fabric from a few years ago. 		     


I'm going to give you instructions on how to make several different 6 1/2 inch stars, and a few 4 1/2 inch stars. You can easily see the 6 1/2 inch stars, there are two sets in each column. I have two 4 1/2 inch stars in my quilt, top left and bottom right corner. You might notice in the layout blocks above right, both of those 4 1/2 inch stars were in the same block, upper right corner. I wanted to repeat that look in both corners, but ran out of fabric. So I took one little star from the first friendship block, and put in in the second friendship star block.

I will give you the cutting directions for the 6 1/2 inch blocks here. When the cutting is finished, link to the directions for the larger block (underlined) and follow those directions to assemble your blocks. Remember measure accurately, cut accurately and sew accurately, and your blocks will be the correct size when you are finished. These are smaller blocks, so each inaccuracy will quickly add up, and become a problem rather than a finished block.


Ann's Star 		For a six inch finished (6 1/2 unfinished) Ann's Star you need:
From your background cut sixteen 1 1/2 inch squares
From color one cut eight 1 1/2 squares
From color two cut four 1 1/2 by 2 1/2 inch rectangles and one 2 1/2 inch square
From color three cut four 1 1/2 by 2 1/2 inch rectangles

April Star 		For a six inch finished (6 1/2 unfinished) April Star block you will need:
From a background cut four 2 1/2 inch squares and
one 3 1/4 inch square, which you need to divide diagonally into quarters.
From your pale star fabric cut one 2 1/2 inch square and
one 3 1/4 inch square which you need to divide diagonally into quarters.
From your medium star fabric cut two 2 7/8 inch squares and divide those diagonally once

Eccentric Star 		For a six inch finished (6 1/2 unfinished) Eccentric Star you will need:
From your lighter star color cut two 2 7/8 inch squares and a four 2 1/2 inch square
From your medium star color cut two 2 7/8 inch squares
From your background cut four 2 7/8 inch squares.

Another
Eccentric Star 		For a six inch finished (6 1/2 unfinished) Eccentric Star you will need:
From your lighter star color cut two 2 7/8 inch squares.
From your medium star color cut two 2 7/8 inch squares and a four 2 1/2 inch square
From your background cut four 2 7/8 inch squares.

Floating Eight
Pointed Star 		For a six inch finished (6 1/2 unfinished) Floating Eight Pointed Star you will need:
From your background cut eight 2 1/2 inch squares
From your star fabric cut one 2 1/2 inch square and eight 2 by 2 1/2 inch rectangles

Friendship Star 		For a six inch finished (6 1/2 unfinished) Friendship Star block you will need:
from your star color cut two 2 7/8 inch squares and one 2 1/2 inch square.
from your background color cut two 2 7/8 inch squares and four 2 1/2 inch squares.

Ohio Star 		For a six inch finished (6 1/2 unfinished) Ohio Star block you will need:
From a medium cut two 3 1/4 inch squares and one 2 1/2 inch square.
From a light cut one 3 1/4 inch square
From a background cut one 3 1/4 inch square and four 2 1/2 inch squares.

Perpetual Motion
(or Comet Star) 		For a six inch finished (6 1/2 unfinished) Perpetual Motion block you will need
from your blue, cut two 2 7/8 inch squares and one 2 1/2 inch square
from your yellow, cut two 2 7/8 inch squares
from your background cut four 2 7/8 inch squares

Spinning Star 		For a six inch finished (6 1/2 unfinished) Spinning Star block you will need:
From a background cut four 2 1/2 inch squares and
one 3 1/4 inch square, which you need to divide diagonally into quarters.
From your pale star fabric cut one 2 1/2 inch square and
one 3 1/4 inch square which you need to divide diagonally into quarters.
From your medium star fabric cut two 2 7/8 inch squares and divide those diagonally once
